TCI is honored to have been selected for inclusion in this year's Slingshot Guide.

Slingshot, A Resource Guide to Jewish Innovation, is an annual compilation of the 50 most inspiring and innovative organizations, projects, and programs in the North American Jewish community today. First published in 2005, and now in its fifth edition, Slingshot continues to highlight those organizations in Jewish life with particular resonance among the next generation.

How Organizations Are Selected

25 foundation professionals with expertise in funding Jewish life evaluate hundreds of nominations. Evaluators review each nominee against four criteria:

Innovation:

How creative, inventive, pioneering or groundbreaking is the organization in responding to the changing needs of the Jewish community and the world around it?

Impact:

Does the organization reach a critical mass of people? Is it affecting the attitudes and behaviors of its constituents and the Jewish community?

Strong Leadership:

Is there someone at the helm who brings character, vision and guidance? Is this person paving a new path in the Jewish community? Is s/he seen as a strong leader by her/his organization and by the field?

Organizational Effectiveness:

Is the organization sound? Is it strategic in the way it does business? Is it efficient and responsible about how it raises and spends money?

With evaluation scores and feedback, additional due diligence is conducted by reviewing organizational documents, publications, budgets, strategic plans, films and music. After consulting with evaluators once again, Slingshot staff arrive at the final 50.

Slingshot History

The idea for Slingshot originated in Grand Street, a network for 18 to 28 year-olds who are or will soon be involved in their families' philanthropy. Unable to navigate the complex map of Jewish institutions offering involvement and looking for Jewish life that resonated with their generation, Grand Street members proposed developing a Zagat-style guide. Their idea evolved into the Slingshot book.
